We partake in an exchange student program with 6 affiliated institutions. Each year MAU sends one student to each of these 6 institutions to study for one year; in turn, each institution sends one or two students to MAU for one semester.

■OAXACA MAGICA
-Organized by: Department of Japanese Painting in cooperation with Centro de las Artes de San Agustin (Mexico).
-Dates: February 12 to March 12, 2011
-Participants from MAU: Aguri Uchida (Professor), Takafumi Kijima (Lecturer), Shingo Tameso (Research Associate), 1 student
-Participants from Mexico: 35 artists/students
-A workshop about Japanese Painting techniques was held using paper and paints made of indigenous natural materials such as rock, soil and plants in Oaxaca. Various works produced at the workshop were exhibited at a gallery. This provided an opportunity to seek contemporary ways of expression in Japanese Painting.
■International Workshop at BODW 2010
-Organized by: Department of Visual Communication Design in cooperation with Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) (Hong Kong)
-Dates: November 27 to December 5, 2010
-Participants from MAU: Chiu Leimei Julia (Professor), Atsuro Ueki (Lecturer), 14 Students
-Participants from PolyU: Rémi Leclerc (Assistant Professor), 15 students
-A presentation about the class “Design for BOP (Base of the Pyramid)” was given at Business of Design Week, an international design symposium in Hong Kong. 6,000 people visited the exhibition and 300 audiences/members participated in the presentation session given by the students. ■China-Japan International Collaboration in Jingdezhen
-Organized by: Department of Industrial, Interior and Craft Design in cooperation with Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute (JCI) (China)
-Dates: August 23 to August 29, 2010
-Participants from MAU: Makoto Komatsu (Professor), Keiko Isoya (Lecturer), Seiichiro Takeda (Lecturer), Satoshi Nishikawa (Lecturer), Chiharu Hagiwara (Lecturer), Toshiro Aki (Research Associate), Yuri Kajiyama (Research Associate), Mayuko Goshi (Laboratory Assistant), Yuuki Sakata (Laboratory Assistant), Eriko Yano (Laboratory Assistant), 28 students
-Participants from JCI: 20 students
-Students from the ceramic course at MAU visited museums and institutions in Jingdezhen, which is known as the oldest home of ceramics. A workshop about glazing on ceramics was also jointly held with Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute. Seeing and experiencing first-hand totally
different materials and techniques offered new insight to the students.
■Chelsea Campus Project

-The theme of the joint workshop is based around “Theatrical Space”. Students from MAU and Chelsea College of Art and Design conducted comparative research about theatrical art and theaters in Japan and the UK. ■Thinking about the Environment through Research on Urban Color Design
-Organized by: Department of Science of Design in cooperation with Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU) (Korea)
-Dates: November 1 to November 6, 2010
-Participants from MAU: Akiyo Kobayashi (Professor), Shingo Yoshida (Professor), Manabu Shiraishi (Associate Professor), 14 students
-Participants from SKKU: 25 students
-The theme of the workshop is to investigate how urban color design would influence the landscape. Groups of students from each university conducted field research about environmental colors in Seoul, drew a sample of characteristic colors, and gave presentation about their findings.
■Cultural Library: A Style Encyclopedia of Different Aspects of Culture
-Organized by: Department of Design Informatics in cooperation with Koeln International School of Design (KISD) (Germany) and Central Saint

-This project aims to survey and compile information on lifestyles, social structures, linguistic culture, and styles in the formative arts etc. and build a database as a design education resource. Professors from three universities visited each school and conducted the workshop.
■International Workshop with the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture (KARCH) (Denmark)

-The purpose of the workshop is to investigate how the space between houses/buildings influences the architecture. 18 students from KARCH visited Tokyo and went on an excursion to historical residential districts as well as urban districts as part of their field research. They participated in home-stays with Japanese students and experienced their ways of living and residential characteristics in Japan. ■International Workshop with the Royal Institute of Art (KKH) (Sweden)

-The purpose of the workshop is to explore what time means for artists and what role time plays in visual arts. Lectures about “time” from four different perspectives, philosophy, physics, sculpture and imaging arts, were delivered and students created their own works based on the theme “10 seconds”. The outcome of the workshop were exhibited at the university.
