I aim to create paintings that are fresh. While working, I always think inside the frame and attempt to integrate elements as a painting. I basically use my body to paint and then look at what I have painted, seeking a sense of depth and the effects born of painterly elements and chance, and in the course of multiple iterations I discover the painting. This is an indirect method, but an effective one. Approaching a painting with any sort of preconception seems to actually make the target easier to lose. There is power in the instability that comes with distance, one that enables me to feel a motivation and compulsion to integrate unconnected elements. In guiding students, I engage them in repeated dialogue in the presence of their work. In doing so, I aim to foster in them both a deeper understanding of their own work and the ability to pursue independent research by themselves.
