While based in the painting techniques of 17th-century Europe, I am engaged in a search for the possibilities of contemporary realist painting.
Looking at the evolution of European painting techniques, starting with fresco and continuing all the way to oils by way of tempera, we can see a type of mutual interaction. That is, the creative drive of artists of a particular period gave rise to the next painting medium; and once a new material was acquired, its special characteristics guided artists’ creativity in a new direction. In a sense, selecting techniques and materials is also selecting one’s own expressive style.
In my class, students learn about methods for conversing with materials in the creative process while studying techniques used in European classical painting, mainly from the 15th to the 17th century. Undoubtedly, this also contains important hints for our creative expression in the present.
